Foundation Day 4: Final Touches Before Pouring the Concrete

Today turned out to be more of a family day on site. While Mr. Right, my brother, and my dad were busy tying up loose ends before tomorrow’s big concrete pour, I kept the kids entertained with a picnic on a grassy mound nearby. I spent most of the day entertaining them and soaking up the chaos in the best possible way.

Small but Important Tasks Before Concrete

Since most of the heavy prep work was already completed yesterday, today was about the details that make all the difference.

Terrace Post Forms: My brother and Mr. Right installed forms where the terrace posts will stand. Getting these at the right height and with correct spacing was crucial—no one wants a balcony post blocking a window later!

Traps Filled with Insulation: My dad handled filling all the future trap locations with penoplast. After the pour, the foam can be pulled out and each drain finished neatly in place.

Heating Layout Documentation: We carefully wrote down every floor heating circuit and its exact location. This may sound boring, but it saves endless frustration later. With notes in hand, we’ll be able to control heating room by room without resorting to trial and error.

We also double-checked the foundation cutouts: one for the heavy fireplace in the living room and another to support a steel beam that will carry the second floor.

The Driveway Progress

Remember the crushed-club-material driveway from yesterday? Today it was properly compacted, giving us a sturdy, leveled base. Somehow I forgot to include a picture in the last post, so here’s how it looks now:

A Touch of Neighborly Kindness

Amidst all the dust and busyness, we got the sweetest reminder of why this will be such a good place to live. Our neighbor appeared with a woven tray, lace cloth, steaming coffee pot, milk jug, sugar, and even candies for the kids. On a construction site covered in gravel, mud, and sawdust, it felt like a little piece of magic.

She explained it simply: years ago, when they were building their own house with a small child in tow, their neighbors often brought food and kindness. Now it was her turn to pass it on. I hope one day soon we’ll be able to continue that tradition for someone else who starts building nearby.

Looking Ahead: The Big Pour

Tomorrow is concrete day—the moment all these preparations have been leading up to. I’ll be there early with the kids to capture every step. Mr. Right, sadly, will be tied up with other commitments, but I’m not missing this for the world. After all, pouring concrete is the day when our foundation truly comes to life.

Lessons Learned

  • The little details matter: terrace post forms, traps, and heating circuits all save big headaches later.
  • Document everything: future-you will thank you when adjusting heating or plumbing.
  • A kind neighbor can make a dusty construction day feel special. So next time spread the kindness and be that neighbor to someone!
